UK Team Strives for Victory

28 October 2011

Emma Fitzpatrick and Frances McMenemy NTQUK’s very own learners in Caring and those representing the UK at Worldskills 2011 have finally come home.

The conditions were tough; training was intense and even though a medal was not achieved these two learners have done exceptionally well considering what they were up against.

As an observer at the event I can tell you that not only were Frances and Emma being scrutinised but up to 5 judges whilst performing their Caring task with an actor in a care home environment set up, they were also being watched by the public!

The pressure was immense and on the day I attended I can say I was suitability impressed with what I saw. Imagine all those eyes watching your every move and then one of the actresses screaming because they have “burnt” themselves with hot water, not only did Emma and Frances take this in their stride they dealt with the situation in a calm and professional manner, something they should be very proud of.

NTQUK as a whole, Elizabeth Rowlands and Joan Black, and I are all very proud of what they have achieved and even though I know they are disappointed that they did not bring back any medals they have still represented the UK at an international level. We should also bear in mind that the international competitors have about 2 years training for this event whereas our team had about 6 months, so in a quarter of the time they stepped up their game and did remarkably well.
